“The investigation revealed that Amira T. White, a bank manager, stole $54,648 from cash boxes located at the bank and maintained by her,” the Bergen County prosecutors’ office announced on Friday. “Additionally, White withdrew approximately $15,000 from a customer’s account and diverted those funds to her own cash box balance in order to conceal the ongoing theft.”

White surrendered to authorities last week and was charged with two counts of theft by deception, prosecutors said.

The name and location of the bank where White worked was not disclosed, nor was the name of the customer whose account was ripped off to cover White’s crimes.

Lucrecia Jadan Sumba was pronounced dead late Saturday afternoon after her remains were recovered from a trash receptacle near a bank in the small town of Coopersburg, according to Lehigh Valley Live.

Lehigh County District Attorney Gavin Holihan reportedly said no crime had been committed in Lehigh County, but stated that law enforcement in another state apprehended a person of interest. NJ.com said Sumba’s death is being investigated as a homicide.

A fundraising page set up to help the victim’s family describes her as a married mother of four who came to the U.S. from Ecuador in 2021. Colleagues at the nail salon where she worked became concerned when Sumba didn’t show up for work Thursday after having off the previous day.

The victim was said to have come to the United States “looking for a better future for her family” and was working toward her GED.

Coopersburg is located just south of Allentown near Pennsylvania’s border with New Jersey. It’s home to roughly 2,500 people.

The Grammy winner is confirmed to sing “America the Beautiful” when Trump is sworn in for his second term as president on Jan. 20 in Washington.

Representatives for Trump confirmed Monday that the “Before He Cheats” singer will be joined by the Armed Forces Choir and United States Naval Academy Glee Club.

Underwood, 41, was the headliner of “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest” on Dec. 31. The Oklahoma native came to fame after winning “American Idol” in 2005, and has since earned six platinum albums, eight Grammy Awards and five Country Music Association Female Vocalist of the Year Awards. She’s thrice been named the Academy of Country Music Awards’ Entertainer of the Year, the most of any female artist.

The Village People are also onboard to perform at Trump’s inauguration celebrations next week. The disco-era band’s late 1970s hit “YMCA” — widely considered a gay anthem — was prominent on the 2024 presidential campaign trail. The song also spawned a signature dance by the president-elect.

The group’s longtime front man Victor Willis (who plays the cop character) confirmed on social media Monday that they would appear at several parties in Washington, despite their difference in political ideologies.

“Our song YMCA is a global anthem that hopefully helps bring the country together after a tumultuous and divided campaign where our preferred candidate lost,” the 73-year-old crooner wrote on Facebook. “Therefore, we believe it’s now time to bring the country together with music.”

Grammy-winning country singer/songwriter Lee Greenwood and opera singer Christopher Macchio have also been confirmed as inauguration ceremony performers.

“God Bless the U.S.A.,” which Greenwood released in 1984, has become a patriotic anthem and is frequently played at Trump rallies.

Carter, the nation’s 39th President, died Dec. 29 and was buried in his hometown of Plains, Ga., last week. President Biden ordered a 30-day mourning period for the Democrat, who lived to be 100 years old. That means flags will be at half-staff when Trump is inaugurated Jan. 20.

The president-elect has expressed frustration that his day of celebration will coincide with the mourning of a former president.

“The Democrats are all ‘giddy’ about our magnificent American Flag potentially being at ‘half mast’ during my Inauguration,” he posted to social media Jan. 3. “Nobody wants to see this, and no American can be happy about it. Let’s see how it plays out.”

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced Monday that he, too, is ready to take a break from mourning Carter to begin celebrating Trump.

“As we unite our country and usher in this new era of leadership, I ordered all flags to be raised to full-staff at the Texas Capitol and all state buildings for the inauguration of President Trump,” the Republican governor said in a statement

Flying flags at half-staff for 30 days after a president dies is U.S. policy, though there are no clear consequences for breaking with that tradition. Flags are lowered for 10 days to mourn the death of a vice president, speaker of the House and an active or retired Supreme Court chief justice.

Carter served a single term in the White House before leaving office in 1981. No U.S. president lived longer. All five living presidents attended his funeral in Washington on Thursday. They are Trump, Biden, Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.

Details for Trump’s inauguration continued to take shape Monday with musicians Carrie Underwood and the Village People announcing they’ll sing for the 47th president.

“We know this won’t make some of you happy to hear however we believe that music is to be performed without regard to politics,” the Village People posted on Facebook.

Their 1978 song “YMCA” frequently plays at Trump events. The president-elect told podcasters the Nelk Boys in 2022 that’s one of the songs he plays when hosting parties at Mar-a-Lago.

The two, whom police did not identify, were booked on charges of violating the curfew that has been in effect in evacuation zones since late last week. They were arrested at 4:40 a.m. Saturday, the Los Angeles Police Department told Deadline.

The two were among 29 arrests that have been made for burglary, breaking curfew and other violations since the fires started, Deadline noted. About 25 of those were related to the Eaton fire and four in the Palisades area, Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department Chief Robert Luna said Sunday, according to USA Today.

Harris’s property was never in danger of being burglarized, since it is guarded 24/7 by secret service agents collaborating with local law enforcement, and the pair “likely had no idea where they were,” a law enforcement source told KNBC-TV.

The LAPD said the matter was being investigated.

Harris’s Brentwood neighborhood, where Dennis Quaid, LeBron James, Harrison Ford and Arnold Schwarzenegger also have homes, was evacuated last Wednesday as the Palisades Fire crept closer.

As of early Monday, at least 25 people had been killed, the Los Angeles Times reported, and 16 were missing, numbers that authorities said would most likely rise. More than 80,000 people have been displaced.

The Jan. 15 premiere of Duchess of Sussex’s new Netflix series, “With Love, Meghan” is now scheduled to air March 4 amid the Los Angeles wildfires.

Markle, who resides with husband Prince Harry and children in nearby Montecito, announced the delay of the 8-episode lifestyle show on Sunday.

“I’m thankful to my partners at Netflix for supporting me in delaying the launch as we focus on the needs of those impacted by the wildfires in my home state of California,” she said in a statement.

The actress, who grew up in L.A.’s Crenshaw neighborhood, joined her husband on Friday at the Pasadena Convention Center to offer support to victims and first responders of the ongoing blazes ravaging areas of Los Angeles that have killed at least 24 people.

The couple also shared resources on their website last week, writing, “In the last few days, wildfires in Southern California have raged through neighborhoods and devastated families, homes, schools, medical care centers, and so much more — affecting tens of thousands from all walks of life. A state of emergency has been issued.”

When Netflix debuted the official trailer for “With Love, Meghan” on Jan. 2, the former “Suits” star faced some blowback on social media for being out of touch.

Meghan McCain was chief among the critics slamming the series, which the streamer promoted as “blending practical how-to’s and candid conversation with friends, new and old.”

Actress Mindy Kaling, Korean BBQ kingpin Roy Choi and culinary celebrity Alice Waters were announced as special guests.

“I was originally a Meghan Markle supporter. I thought she was cool, stylish and refreshing,” McCain wrote in a fiery social media post. “Like the rest of the world my opinion changed when she disrespected the royal family. Now that she wants to be American again instead of British aristocracy what she seems to forget is Americans want real, raw, uncensored. All of this even in the trailer is highly curated, produced and out of touch.”

In her tweet, the former co-host of “The View” cited the turmoil of the world — ” 2 terror attacks in 2 days, major wars raging and Americans can’t pay for groceries” — for her ire against Markle.

Cops said Michael Lewis, 55, traveled from his hometown of Denton, Texas, to the city where Clark plays for the Indiana Fever in the WNBA, the Indianapolis Star reported. He was arrested Sunday at a hotel in the city, the Marion County prosecutor’s office announced.

Investigators said Lewis sent a series of threatening messages to Clark between Dec. 16 and Jan. 2, according to ESPN. One message read: “Been driving around your house 3x a day. But don’t call the law just yet.”

Police officers confronted Lewis about his behavior on Jan. 8 in the hotel room, but he downplayed his actions and didn’t stop, local Fox affiliate WXIN reported. Authorities arrested him four days later.

Clark, the 22-year-old superstar who rewrote the NCAA record books at Iowa and won Rookie of the Year in the WNBA, told authorities she was shaken by the messages and changed her appearance and routine, the Star reported.

“No matter how prominent a figure you are, this case shows that online harassment can quickly escalate to actual threats of physical violence,” Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears said in a statement.

Lewis was charged with one count of stalking threatening sexual battery or death, according to WXIN. He faces a maximum of six years in prison and a $10,000 fine and is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.

The victims have not been publicly identified. The injured people were seriously injured and taken to a local hospital, WABC reported.

All four victims were in the same car, and only one car was found at the scene, according to Newsday.

The vehicle was traveling eastbound through North Massapequa on the Southern State Parkway and crashed near Exit 30 around 11 p.m., WPIX reported. The eastbound lanes were closed for six hours overnight but reopened before 6 a.m. Monday for morning commuters.

Regular drivers told News 12 Long Island that the area is known for speeding and reckless driving.

“The Southern State Parkway going east between exits 29 to 31, frequent accidents because people are zigging in and out and they’re speeding,” driver Ashley McQueen told the outlet.

The wrecked car landed upside down in the middle of the grassy median between on- and off-ramps, and there were collision marks on a tree, according to News 12. Additionally, an exit sign had been knocked down, and car parts were strewn around the area.

New York State Police are investigating the incident.

“Late yesterday evening, we were made aware of a potential threat to our district,” Interim Superintendent of Schools Damen Cooper wrote in a note posted to the district’s website at about 5 a.m. “Upon receiving this information, we immediately contacted the Montclair Police Department and have been closely following their guidance.”

Police advised the district to close all schools until the potential threat could be addressed, Cooper wrote.

“At this time, I am unable to share specific details regarding the nature of the threat,” he continued. “However, please know that we are working collaboratively with law enforcement to monitor the situation and ensure the security of our schools.”

Just after 9:30 a.m. he issued an update, saying that “through the diligent efforts and collaboration with the Montclair Police Department, the threat we were addressing has been neutralized.”

He did not elaborate on the nature of the threat, while acknowledging the “anxiety and disruption for our entire school community” that the move had undoubtedly caused.

Montclair Mayor Renee Baskerville said she was closely monitoring the situation and in constant contact with both school officials and the police department, emphasizing that there was no immediate danger.

“I want to make clear to our community that the school closings today are a precautionary measure, and there is no immediate threat,” she said in a statement Monday.

Montclair is about 20 miles west of New York City.

“Please know that every step taken was guided by our unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and families,” Cooper said. “Your safety remains my highest priority. Thank you for your patience, understanding, and support throughout this time.”

The blazes started last Tuesday, fueled by fierce Santa Ana winds that forecasters expect to kick back up through at least midweek. Cal Fire reported that the Palisades, Eaton, Kenneth and Hurst fires have consumed about 62 square miles (160 square kilometers).

The Palisades Fire, along the coast, has been blamed for eight deaths, while the Eaton Fire further inland has been blamed for 16 others, the LA County medical examiner’s office said. At least 23 people are missing, and authorities said that number is expected to rise.

Investigators are still trying to determine what sparked the fires. They could be the nation’s costliest ever. Government agencies haven’t provided preliminary damage estimates yet, but AccuWeather, a company that provides data on weather and its impact, puts the damage and economic losses at $250 billion to $275 billion.

Here’s a closer look at what to know about the fires.

Forecasters warn of a “particularly dangerous situation”

The National Weather Service issued a rare warning about a “particularly dangerous situation” related to severe fire conditions beginning overnight Monday into Tuesday.

Sustained winds of up to 40 mph (64 kph) and gusts in the mountains reaching 65 mph (105 kph) are predicted through Wednesday, forecasters said. The most dangerous day will be Tuesday, fire behavior analyst Dennis Burns warned at a community meeting Sunday night.

Strong Santa Ana winds have been largely blamed for turning the wildfires into infernos that leveled entire neighborhoods in and around Los Angeles where there has been no significant rainfall in over eight months.

Interactive maps show locations of damaged homes

LA County Recovers, a government-run program, posted interactive maps on its website that show homes and other structures that have been damaged.

The maps for the Eaton and Palisades fires allow users to click on an icon and get a description of the type of structure, such as a home or commercial building, and the type of damage, such as “major” or “destroyed.”

Addresses may be entered into a search bar to find a specific location. Users can also see photos of the damaged buildings.

Looting and price gouging add to the problems

Nearly three dozen people accused of looting have been arrested for taking things from damaged homes and businesses, authorities said.

“We’re starting to see the criminal emerge,” Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said at a news conference Monday.

Price gouging has become an issue with hotels, short-term rentals and medical supplies. Scammers are also soliciting donations for bogus relief efforts, authorities said.

Thousands remain evacuated or without power

The flames have threatened and burned through several highly populated neighborhoods over the past week, including Pacific Palisades, Altadena and others.

Officials on Monday lowered the number of people under evacuation orders from about 150,000 to under 100,000. However, they cautioned that more evacuations could be ordered when high winds return this week.

The Kenneth Fire, which broke out near West Hills in the San Fernando Valley, was completely contained, while the Hurst Fire was 95% contained.

About 50,000 customers, more than half of them in Los Angeles County, were without power across California as of Monday morning, according to PowerOutage.us, which tracks outages nationwide. That is down from about 70,000 on Sunday.

Sewer, water and power infrastructure across the region has been significantly damaged, officials said.

Thousands have fled and many have lost their homes, including Hollywood stars Billy Crystal and Mandy Moore and Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick.

Meanwhile, singer Beyoncé has contributed $2.5 million to a newly launched LA Fire Relief Fund created by her charitable foundation, BeyGOOD.

The fires have scorched more than just landmarks and celebrity homes

Although the fires have reduced a number of celebrity mansions and movie landmarks to ashes, they also burned through more affordable communities such as Altadena, which has served as for generations of Black families who might have faced discriminatory housing practices elsewhere.

The fires have also destroyed several places of worship, including a mosque, a synagogue, a Catholic parish and a half-dozen Protestant churches.

Investigators are looking into what sparked the fires

No cause has been determined yet for the fires.

Lightning is the most common source of fires in the U.S., according to the National Fire Protection Association, but investigators quickly ruled that out. There were no reports of lightning in the Palisades area or the terrain around the Eaton Fire, which started in eastern Los Angeles County.

The next two most common causes are fires that are intentionally set or caused by electricity lines.

Several events have been canceled and postponed

The Critics Choice Awards rescheduled Sunday ceremonies in Santa Monica for Jan. 26.

The organization that puts on the Oscars extended the voting window for Academy Award nominations and delayed next week’s planned nominations announcement.

The NFL moved the Los Angeles Rams’ wild-card playoff game against the Minnesota Vikings to Arizona because of the fires. The game will be played Monday night. And the NBA postponed the Lakers’ game against the Hornets.

NBA games are scheduled to return to Los Angeles on Monday night, with the Clippers hosting the Miami Heat and the Lakers set to host the San Antonio Spurs. It’ll be the Clippers’ first game in five days after having their home game against Charlotte on Saturday postponed. The Lakers had two home games pushed back.
