Here’s everything we know so far about the people who have died in the Eaton and Palisades fires.

Mitchell White, a 67-year-old amputee, died last week along with the disabled son he stayed behind to care for.

“He was not going to leave his son behind. No matter what,” Mitchell White’s daughter told the Washington Post.

White’s son, Justin, was in his early 20s and had cerebral palsy. Both men died waiting for an ambulance to arrive. Mitchell White was found by the side of his son’s bed inside their home in Altadena.

Victor Shaw, 66, died with a garden hose in his hand outside the home that had been in his family for nearly 55 years. His body was discovered alongside an Altadena-area road on Wednesday, according to Los Angeles station KTLA.

Shaw lived in the home with his younger sister, Shari, who said she tried to get her brother to evacuate but he chose to fight the Eaton Fire rather than flee.

“When I went back in and yelled out his name, he didn’t reply back, and I had to get out because the embers were so big and flying like a firestorm — I had to save myself,” Shari Shaw said. “I looked behind me, and the house was starting to go up in flames, and I had to leave.”

Rodney Nickerson, 82, died in his bed at the Altadena home he purchased with a $5 down payment in 1968, according to his daughter.

“He said that he felt this was going to pass over and that he would be here,” Kimiko Nickerson said of her dad’s final moments, adding that he’d lived through his fair share of fires through the years.

Retired Rite Aid pharmacy technician Erliene Kelley died in her home not far from where Shaw and Nickerson were killed in the Eaton Fire, according to the New York Times.

Her neighbors said people in the area thought they were out of harm’s way until they suddenly smelled smoke and received emergency alerts.

“It was panic,” Terry Pyburn said. “Everyone took off and no one thought to check on anybody.”

Annette Rossilli, 85, stayed behind in her her Pacific Palisades home to stay with her dog, canary, two parrots and turtle, according to Luxe Homecare, the in-home care company which she used. Her body was found in her car on Wednesday.

Erliene Kelley chose not to evacuate her Altadeena home, even after several family members did. The Eaton fire destroyed the family’s home by Wednesday and they learned on Friday that Kelley had died.

Rory Callum Sykes, 32, died when the fire ripped through his family’s Malibu estate. The Australian actor had appeared on the 1998 British TV series “Kiddy Kapers.”

Randy Miod also died at his Malibu home, his mother, Carol Smith, told CNN.

“That’s the one and only house he ever owned,” Smith said. “He just felt so blessed to be able to live in Malibu. That was his dream come true because he’d been surfing since he was a teenager.”

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office identified Charles Mortimer, 84, as another victim of the Palisades blaze. He died at hospital on Jan. 8 from acute myocardial infarction, effects of smoke inhalation, thermal injuries, and coronary artery atherosclerosis.

Dalyce Curry, 95, had her remains discovered in the ruins of the Altadena fire. A former actor, she had appeared as an extra in classic films like “The Ten Commandments” and “Blues Brothers” according to KABC.

The Eaton Fire has ravaged nearly 14,000 acres of the Altadena area.

Man arrested with machete, knives at Capitol Visitor Center during Jimmy Carter viewing https://www.nydailynews.com/2025/01/08/man-arrested-capitol-visitor-center-machete/ Wed, 08 Jan 2025 23:39:13 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=8064176 A man was arrested Wednesday afternoon after trying to enter the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center with a machete and knives during the Jimmy Carter casket viewing.

The man was stopped at a security screening around 2 p.m., Capitol Police said.

Officers spotted the machete in the man’s bag as it passed through a X-ray machine. A follow-up search of the bag turned up three additional knives.

“The man is being arrested for multiple charges of carrying a dangerous weapon,” police said on social media.

The suspect was identified early Wednesday evening as 44-year-old Mel J. Horne, of Washington, D.C. Investigators are still working to determine a motive for Horne’s actions, Capitol Police said in a statement.

Security screening at the entrance was delayed for roughly an hour, but the viewing of former President Jimmy Carter’s casket in the Capitol Rotunda was otherwise unaffected. Thousands came out to pay their respects to Carter, who died Dec. 29 at the age of 100.

The 39th president’s remains will stay in the Rotunda — and available to be viewed by the public — until Thursday morning, followed by a state funeral at Washington National Cathedral where President Biden will deliver the eulogy.

NBC Washington reporter Derrick Ward dies at 62 https://www.nydailynews.com/2025/01/08/derrick-ward-dies-nbc4-washington-reporter-cardiac-arrest/ Wed, 08 Jan 2025 22:24:10 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=8063946 Derrick Ward, a longtime reporter for NBC 4 in Washington, D.C., died on Tuesday at the age of 62.

His death was caused by complications from recent cardiac arrest, reported the station, which remembered its colleague as “News4’s resident DC historian and poet.”

“He had a way with words and music,” NBC 4 said in a statement. “He shined when he had a pen, a microphone, or guitar in his hands. Derrick loved serving the people of Washington through his reporting. His impact on the community will sorely be missed.”

Ward grew up in the D.C. area, attending HD Woodson High School and the University of Maryland. He began his career in radio, working for a number of stations in the city where he covered major stories including the Sept. 11 attack on the Pentagon and the D.C. sniper shootings.

He made the move into TV news with a job at WKBW in Buffalo before returning to D.C. in 2006 to join the capital’s NBC affiliate.

WTOP, a D.C. radio station where Ward once worked, also memorialized the reporter.

“Derrick Ward was truly an outstanding journalist,” WTOP President Joel Oxley said. “His passion and dedication shown through every day. But what set him apart was what a great person he was. His warmth and caring were evident at every turn. Everybody liked Derrick. I saw why right away.”

Ward is survived by his three children: Derrick, Jr., Ian and Marisa.

W.V. hospital workers charged in death of nonverbal man left in scalding water https://www.nydailynews.com/2025/01/08/west-virginia-nurses-charged-death-nonverbal-patient-burns/ Wed, 08 Jan 2025 20:00:30 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=8063572 Two West Virginia hospital workers have been charged in connection with the death of a nonverbal patient who was left in a tub filled with scalding-hot water in early 2024.

Larry Hedrick, 61, a nonverbal man in need of constant care, was put into a tub of 134-degree water for 47 minutes at Hopemont Hospital in Terra Alta, West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey said Wednesday.

The Jan. 4, 2024 incident left Hedrick with second- and third-degree burns and blisters on his feet and legs. He was taken to a burn trauma unit in Pittsburgh but died on Jan. 12.

An investigation led by the state’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit determined that certified nursing assistant Kylah Beard helped Hedrick into the water without checking the temperature gauge. After Hedrick suffered his injuries, registered nurse Delilah Clyburn-Hill failed to take appropriate treatment steps, including the use of pain medication, Morrisey said.

Both were charged with felony neglect of an incapacitated adult by a caregiver resulting in the incapacitated adult’s death. Both are scheduled to appear in Preston County Magistrate Court later this month.

An investigation into other employees who were tasked with caring for Hedrick is ongoing and could lead to additional indictments.

“This is a very disturbing case and there needs to be accountability for the horrific death of the victim, Mr. Larry Hedrick, who was supposed to be under the care of medical professionals,” said Morrisey, who will be sworn in as West Virginia’s governor next week.

Former Baltimore Orioles pitcher Brian Matusz dies at 37 https://www.nydailynews.com/2025/01/08/brian-matusz-dies-baltimore-orioles-pitcher-mlb/ Wed, 08 Jan 2025 17:04:33 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=8063088 Brian Matusz, a former major league pitcher known for a long stint with the Baltimore Orioles, died Tuesday. He was 37.

Matusz played college baseball at the University of San Diego and was the No. 4 pick in the 2008 MLB draft, one spot ahead of potential Hall of Famer Buster Posey.

He debuted in the big leagues the following year and made 68 starts over in 279 games. His lone appearance with another club came in 2016 when he made an emergency start for the Chicago Cubs in his final pro game. Though he only lasted three innings in that game, as even a brief member of a World Series-winning squad, he received a championship ring.

He retired from baseball in 2019.

“Our hearts are heavy tonight as we mourn the passing of former Oriole, Brian Matusz,” the team said in a statement.

“A staple in our clubhouse from 2009-2016, Brian was beloved throughout Birdland, and his passion for baseball and our community was unmatched. He dedicated his time to connecting with any fan he could, was a cherished teammate, and always had a smile on his face. Brian’s family and loved ones are in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.”

Matusz, who settled as a reliever, had great success against Red Sox Hall of Famer slugger David Ortiz, who hit a meager 4-for-29 (.138) with 13 strikeouts against the Orioles’ lefty hurler.

Matusz was born in Grand Junction, Colo., and played high school baseball at St. Mary’s High School in Phoenix where he developed into a sought-after prospect. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels in 2005 but decided to attend the University of San Diego where he stood out and became a top prospect.

He would have turned 38 on Feb. 11.

“It’s been a blessing to be a part of such a great organization, such a great city, to kind of see the ballclub and the city thrive,” Matusz told The Baltimore Sun in 2019. “To be able to be a part of the 2012, 2014 postseason and pitch in the playoffs and be able to contribute really was special. Good memories and great friendships that were made. Those were some great moments in my life personally and in my playing career that I’ll never forget.”

Elijah Wood hints at marriage to longtime partner Mette-Marie Kongsved https://www.nydailynews.com/2025/01/07/elijah-wood-married-mette-marie-kongsved/ Wed, 08 Jan 2025 02:04:06 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=8062645 One ring to wed them both?

“Lord of the Rings” star Elijah Wood seemed to confirm he and longtime partner Mette-Marie Kongsved tied the knot amid a flurry of nuptial rumors.

During an appearance on Michael Rosenbaum’s “Inside of You” podcast Tuesday, Wood referred to film producer Kongsved as his “wife.”

“I’m beyond grateful for my family and my kids and my wife,” the 43-year-old Wood said.

The couple’s son was born in 2019, and a daughter in 2022. TMZ reported the ceremony was held in Sweden on New Year’s Eve.

Wood has taken steps to keep his family life private, going so far as to have a private Instagram account.

“I wanted to be able to share photos that I didn’t necessarily want to share with the world,” he told Parade in 2023. “An account that’s public-facing would really change what I share. It’s not like I’m sharing anything that I wouldn’t want to go out, but I’m a relatively private person.”

He and Kongsved have collaborated on multiple films, including “I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore,” “Come to Daddy” and “Bookworm,” which was released in 2024.

Ohio woman mauled to death, partially eaten by neighbor’s pigs https://www.nydailynews.com/2025/01/07/ohio-woman-killed-pigs-neighbor/ Wed, 08 Jan 2025 01:23:47 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=8062598 An Ohio woman was mauled to death and partially eaten by her neighbor’s pigs, police said.

The 75-year-old woman was attacked on Christmas Day in Pataskala, police chief Bruce Brooks said.

Police were called to perform a welfare check on Rebecca Westergaard after she did not arrive as planned at her niece’s home. She was found with injuries to her lower body outside on her front porch.

Investigators determined she had been mauled and eaten by two pigs that belong to Westergaard’s neighbor and were wandering near her home.

Aggressive pigs that attack humans produce severe injuries due to trampling, kicking and biting, according to the National Library of Medicine.

Brooks said the investigation into the “horrible, horrible situation” is ongoing but that it’s not clear if the neighbor — whose identity has not been released — will be charged since the animals are considered livestock.

“If it was a pit bull or a Rottweiler, or name any of the other 15 dogs that are deemed semi-aggressive, then we would know the answer right away,” Brooks told the Columbus  Dispatch. “But being farm animals, it’s just not something we’ve ever dealt with here.”

The neighbor was advised to quarantine the pigs until further notice.

The chief said more details will be released when Westergaard’s autopsy is completed.

Pataskala is a town of about 18,000 roughly 20 miles east of Columbus.

Seattle cop who struck and killed grad student with cruiser fired https://www.nydailynews.com/2025/01/07/seattle-cop-fired-hit-grad-student-jaahnavi-kandula-kevin-dave/ Tue, 07 Jan 2025 23:46:52 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=8062126 A Seattle officer who hit and killed an Indian grad student with a police cruiser in 2023 has been fired.

Interim Seattle police chief Sue Rahr announced Monday that Kevin Dave was fired over the Jan. 23, 2023 incident where Jaahnavi Kandula was killed when the former officer sped through a crosswalk.

Rahr said Dave violated multiple department policies, including failing to use emergency lights during an emergency response and not safely operating a patrol vehicle.

“I believe the officer did not intend to hurt anyone that night and that he was trying to get to a possible overdose victim as quickly as possible,” Rahr wrote in an email to the department. “However, I cannot accept the tragic consequences of his dangerous driving. His positive intent does not mitigate the poor decision that caused the loss of a human life and brought discredit to the Seattle Police Department.”

King County prosecutors said in February 2024 that Dave would not face charges after determining he was not impaired or driving recklessly despite he was driving as fast as 74 mph when he struck Kandula. He was ticketed for second-degree negligent driving by the Seattle City Attorney’s Office. He was fined $5,000 and must complete an eight-hour traffic safety course and 40 hours of community service.

Footage of officer Daniel Auderer, vice president of the Seattle Police Officers Guild, laughing off the woman’s death drew international condemnation and led to his firing in July 2024.

The family of Kandula, a 23-year-old studying at Northeastern University, filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city and Dave in September 2024 and is seeking damages of $110 million.

The Louisiana State Police Narcotics/Violent Crime Task Force uncovered an organization selling opioids, marijuana, THC products and MDMA (also known as Ecstasy) through social media and using the profits from those sales to purchase firearms, some of which were used in other crimes, police said in a news release Tuesday.

Seven arrest warrants were issued, including one for Truong, 25. He faces charges of transactions involving proceeds from drug offenses, unauthorized use of a movable and soliciting for prostitutes.

Truong was booked Tuesday morning and his bond has not been set, according to NOLA.com.

The others have also been charged with transactions involving proceeds from drug offenses. Three were additionally charged with conspiracy to distribute a Schedule I controlled substance and another with distribution of a Schedule II controlled substance.

“A variety of other matters and individuals remain under investigation in connection with matters both separate from and related to the subject matter of today’s arrests,” the state police said.

“We are going to continue to invest time and resources into helping the citizens of Bogalusa,” District Attorney Collin Sims said in a statement. “We are not finished.”

Bogalusa, a city of roughly 12,000 in Washington Parrish, is about 70 miles north of New Orleans.

Truong was elected in 2022, touting his degree from Washington University and experience as an intern for former Rep. Lacy Clay (D-Mo.).
