Just hours after the vice presidential hopeful appeared on CNN Friday morning and refused to apologize for the post, Upton posted, before later deleting, a message of her own on X, labeling his actions as “bullying,” reported Deadline.

“It’s a shame that 17 years later this is still being brought up,” Upton wrote, referencing her now-infamous 2007 clip. “There’s not too much else to say about it at this point. Regardless of political beliefs, one thing I do know is that social media and online bullying needs to stop.”

The clip that Vance shared shows a flustered Upton, trying to answer a question about Americans’ inability to locate the U.S. on a world map.

Her answer, filled with awkward pauses and confused statements, quickly became an early viral sensation and led to widespread mockery.

Upton has since opened up about the impact of the incident, revealing in a 2015 interview with New York Magazine that she experienced “dark moments” and suicidal thoughts due to the backlash.

Following her statement, Upton deleted her X account as critical comments poured in, many pointing out her past support for Donald Trump, who owned the Miss Teen USA pageant from 1996 to 2015.

During his CNN appearance, Vance was questioned by anchor John Berman about Upton’s previous comments regarding her mental health struggles following the viral incident.

Vance expressed sympathy but did not apologize, stating, “I’m not going to apologize for posting a joke, but I wish the best for Caitlin and hope she’s doing well.”

In his original post, Vance wrote, sarcastically, “BREAKING: I have gotten ahold of the full Kamala Harris CNN interview.”

Trump promises to uphold Florida abortion ban following conservative backlash https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/08/30/trump-abortion-reversal-uphold-florida-ban/ Sat, 31 Aug 2024 01:27:39 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7894433 Following backlash from anti-abortion supporters, former president Donald Trump is reversing his stance on Florida’s six-week abortion ban, promising to uphold it, just one day after he suggested he would support a measure that seeks to repeal it.

Trump, who has previously criticized the ban, reiterated his stance in an interview with Fox News on Friday, saying, “I think six weeks, you need more time.”

However, he added, “At the same time, the Democrats are radical,” and repeated misleading claims about late-term abortions, emphasizing his opposition to abortions up to nine months.

“So I’ll be voting no for that reason,” said Trump, who is registered to vote in Florida at his Mar-a-Lago estate.

Under the Florida ballot measure, abortions would be allowed up until fetal viability, which healthcare providers generally define as around 23 to 24 weeks into a pregnancy.

On Thursday, Trump said “I am going to be voting that we need more than six weeks,” seeming to express support for repealing the six-week ban and sparking backlash from anti-abortion supporters.

Following criticism, his campaign quickly clarified that Trump had not specifically stated his voting intention.

The former president’s position on abortion has fluctuated over the years. While he briefly considered endorsing a nationwide 15-week abortion ban, he ultimately declared in April that the decision should be left to individual states.

Since then, he has often taken credit for the Supreme Court decision that overturned Roe v. Wade, describing it as “a beautiful thing to watch.”

Vice President Kamala Harris, his Democratic opponent, responded to Trump’s comments on Friday, saying, “Donald Trump just made his position on abortion very clear: He will vote to uphold an abortion ban so extreme it applies before many women even know they are pregnant.”

Drunk driver accused in death of Gaudreau brothers ordered to remain behind bars https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/08/30/johnny-gaudreau-accident-sean-higgins-drunk-driver-court-appearance/ Sat, 31 Aug 2024 00:53:41 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7894223 The man accused of driving drunk and fatally striking NHL star Johnny Gaudreau and his younger brother, Matthew, made his first court appearance on Friday, where he was ordered to remain behind bars until at least Thursday.

Sean Higgins, 43, closed his eyes and appeared dejected, letting out a deep sigh upon learning he would remain in jail through the holiday weekend, reported TMZ.

Higgins wore an anti-suicide smock as he attended the proceedings virtually from a separate court room, speaking very little in response to the charges.

He faces two counts of death by auto after he allegedly drove his Jeep Cherokee while under the influence, and crashed into the Gaudreau brothers Thursday night in Oldmans Township, N.J.

Johnny and Matthew, in town to attend their sister’s wedding, had been bicycling on a quiet road around 8 p.m.

Higgins reportedly admitted to police that he drank five or six beers before the accident, and had continued drinking after he got into his SUV. Other charges against him include reckless driving, possession of an open container and consuming alcohol in a motor vehicle.

It became apparent on Friday that Higgins would remain behind bars for days after prosecutors filed a motion for his pre-trial detention.

“The statutes and court rules require me to hold you over for a minimum of 72 hours before your hearing,” the judge said. “With the weekend and a Monday holiday, 72 hours extends to Thursday.”

Higgins nodded, showing that he understood, and indicated that he planned to hire a private attorney to represent him. He was then dismissed from the proceedings after telling the judge he had no additional questions.

Later on Friday, the Gaudreau family released a statement regarding the tragedy.

“Last night we lost two husbands, two fathers, two sons, two brothers, two sons- and brothers-in-law, two nephews, two cousins, two family members, two teammates, two friends but truly two amazing humans,” the statement read. “We want to let everyone know we are receiving your messages of love and support and we appreciate your continued thoughts and prayers.”

Artem Chigvintsev’s marriage is ‘volatile,’ sources say, as old allegations of abuse resurface https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/08/30/artem-chigvintsev-nikki-bella-volatile-marraige-abuse-allegations/ Fri, 30 Aug 2024 23:46:50 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7894049 Artem Chigvintsev’s arrest for domestic violence on Thursday has since brought to light long-standing issues in his marriage to Nikki Bella — as well as the resurfacing of past allegations of abuse from a dance partner.

The marriage between the former “Dancing with the Stars” pro and WWE star has allegedly always been “volatile,” according to sources, who tell TMZ there have been frequent arguments for years, often around belittlement and control.

Insiders close to the couple say they weren’t entirely shocked by the news of Chigvintsev’s arrest, which happened after he called paramedics to their Napa Valley home Thursday morning but later canceled that request.

Despite telling first responders not to come, police still showed up to the home roughly an hour later. Upon arrival, they observed injuries consistent with assault and arrested Chigvintsev at the scene.

He was booked at Napa County Jail on charges of felony corporal injury to a spouse and later released on $25,000 bail.

Though Bella was presumably involved in the altercation, that has not been confirmed by her representatives or local law enforcement, who told the Daily News on Thursday the victim had “asked for confidentiality.”

The couple’s relationship troubles have reportedly been well-known among their friends, including former colleagues from “Dancing with the Stars,” the sources claim.

Bella also admitted on a 2021 podcast that she and the Russian dancer were attending couples therapy due to their communication issues, particularly the way he spoke to her when he would get angry or stressed.

Further complicating matters are allegations against Chigvintsev from his time on the U.K. competition show “Strictly Come Dancing,” which have resurfaced within the past day.

In a 2015 interview, British TV personality Fern Britton accused him of being physically abusive during their 2012 stint on the show, including shoving and kicking her, in addition to making threatening comments.

She recalled becoming scared of Chigvintsev, citing a specific time when he allegedly told her, “Shut your face. Go home before I kill you.”

Chigvintsev denied the allegations at the time, stating he always treated Britton with respect and care.

Jack White promises to sue Trump campaign for using White Stripes song https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/08/29/jack-white-suing-trump-campaign-song-use-video/ Fri, 30 Aug 2024 02:56:04 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7892936 Jack White announced plans Thursday to sue Donald Trump’s campaign after a Trump aide used a White Stripes song without permission in a video posted on social media.

Margo Martin, Trump’s deputy director of communications, shared a 10-second video of the former president boarding a plane to campaign events, set to the White Stripes’ hit “Seven Nation Army.”

After the post quickly racked up around 65,000 views, it appeared to get White’s attention, prompting a fierce post of his own.

“Don’t even think about using my music, you fascists,” White wrote in an Instagram post. “Lawsuit coming from my lawyers about this (to add to your 5 thousand others). Have a great day at work today, Margo Martin.”

“A double f— you DonOLD for insulting our nation’s veterans at Arlington you scum,” he added, referencing the Trump campaign’s controversial use of Arlington National Cemetery for a recent photo opportunity.

“You should lose every military family’s vote immediately from that if ANYTHING makes sense anymore,” White concluded.

The original post from Martin was later deleted. It marks the second time in just over a week that Trump has come under fire for using popular songs without permission.

After Trump’s campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung used Beyoncé’s song “Freedom” in a social media video, the singer’s legal team hit Trump with a cease-and-desist, reported Rolling Stone.

ABBA, Celine Dion, the Foo Fighters, Bruce Springsteen and Prince’s estate are among others who have previously objected to the Trump campaign’s use of their music.

The campaign has yet to address the latest controversy involving Jack White. The artist is currently touring in advance of his new solo album “No Name,” and is scheduled to play at the Blind Pig in Ann Arbor on Sunday.

Ex-boyfriend paid nearly $40K for acid attack on NJ woman, says prosecutor https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/08/29/nj-acid-attack-ex-boyfriend-paid-40k/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 22:44:24 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7892329 A Florida man who allegedly planned an acid attack that left his former girlfriend in New Jersey in critical condition reportedly paid almost $40,000 to the individuals who carried out the assault.

William DiBernardino Jr., 49, from Boynton Beach, Fla., allegedly hired a couple from Jacksonville, identified as Betty Jo Lane and Jmarr McNeil, to travel to New Jersey and execute the violent plan, according to the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office.

The incident occurred on July 26 outside the 42-year-old victim’s home in Monroe Township.

She was airlifted to a burn center and still remains in the hospital in critical condition after undergoing more than 10 surgeries, prosecutors said Thursday.

On the day of the attack, Lane, 38, allegedly approached the unidentified victim as she was returning home from work. Lane threw a cup of acid onto her, prosecutors claim, causing chemical burns on roughly 35% of her body.

Lane then sped away from the crime scene with 39-year-old McNeil.

DiBernardino, Lane, and McNeil are now facing charges including attempted murder, aggravated assault, conspiracy to commit murder and stalking.

The ex-boyfriend allegedly provided instructions on where to obtain a GPS tracking device to place on the victim’s car and sent McNeil money to cover their trip to New Jersey and payment to carry out the assault.

It’s unclear what happened between DiBernardino and the victim that led to the attack. The two had been together for 12 years before their split, according to Gloucester County Assistant Prosecutor Dana Anton.

“That is murder-for-hire money. It is clear that this was personal,” Anton said during a Thursday press conference, referring to the nearly $40,000 payment. “This was his ex-fiancée. He wanted her to suffer.”

DiBernardino’s lawyer, Yaron Helmer, has challenged the charges, arguing that using acid as a murder weapon is uncommon and does not necessarily indicate intent to kill.

Top GOP donor blasts Trump for embracing ‘anti-vax kook’ RFK Jr. https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/08/28/gop-donor-blasts-trump-rfk-jr-email/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 02:03:13 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7891356 A newly-released email shows a top Republican donor criticizing former President Donald Trump for adding Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Tulsi Gabbard to his presidential transition team, referring to Kennedy as an “an anti-vax kook.”

The email emerged Wednesday and was sent from Eric Levine, a New York native and prominent board member with the Republican Jewish Coalition, according to Jewish Insider.

Levine’s subject line provocatively asked, “Is Trump Trying to Lose?,” and took aim at Gabbard and Kennedy as “fringe candidates with fringe policy positions” whom he believes will alienate conservative voters.

Criticizing Gabbard, a former Democratic congresswoman from Hawaii, for her previous endorsement of Sen. Bernie Sanders in the 2016 presidential race, Levine said “there is something terribly wrong with this picture.”

The well-known GOP fundraiser warned that Trump’s moves could benefit Vice President Kamala Harris as she aims to appeal to moderate Republicans.

“These should be solid Trump voters,” Levine said, suggesting Trump should bring in “someone like Nikki Haley” and remain focused on policy to retain his strong base.

Levine previously supported Sen. Tim Scott and Haley for president, and once vowed never to vote for Trump again after the 2020 election. He reversed his stance in March, citing concerns about President Biden’s handling of Israel and rising antisemitism, among other issues.

Brittany Mahomes seemingly doubles down on support for Donald Trump https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/08/28/brittany-mahomes-likes-trump-supporter-comment/ Wed, 28 Aug 2024 23:38:22 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7891079 After recently causing an uproar online for what appeared to be a public show of support for former President Donald Trump, Brittany Mahomes seems to be doubling down on her stance by liking an Instagram comment that praised her for not backing down.

On Wednesday, the wife of NFL quarterback Patrick Mahomes posted an Instagram slideshow featuring Kansas City Chiefs merchandise from Abercrombie & Fitch.

“Glad to see you aren’t backing down. We are all entitled to our own opinions and shouldn’t be bullied into submission,” one comment read — seemingly referring to the backlash she received for liking a Trump post last week.

Mahomes liked the comment in response, but later removed that like, according to TMZ.

Just days prior, the 28-year-old Kansas City Current co-owner was caught liking an Instagram post espousing the tenets of Trump’s presidential campaign, though she later removed that like as well.

The post in question outlined Trump’s discriminatory platform — including his vows to “carry out the largest deportation operation in American history,” “keep men OUT of women’s sports,” and “cut federal funding for any school pushing critical race theory, radical gender ideology” or any other content Trump deems “inappropriate.”

Users on X were quick to call out Mahomes for seemingly supporting Trump’s plans, with one writing a message directly to her husband.

“Patrick Mahomes, imagine marrying someone who doesn’t care about your rights and your kids’ rights,” they wrote. “Brittany Mahomes agreeing with Project 2025 but married to a Black man with mixed kids is insane.”

Others meanwhile said they weren’t surprised to see her supporting hateful ideology, specifically pointing to a past incident that many viewed as blatantly racist.

Super-rare orange lobster rescued from Long Island Stop & Shop, returned to ocean https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/08/28/rare-orange-lobster-rescued-southhampton-long-island-stop-and-shop/ Wed, 28 Aug 2024 22:10:08 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7890819 An incredibly rare orange lobster was rescued from a Southampton supermarket and returned to the wild on Tuesday, thanks to a collaborative effort by the Southampton Animal Shelter and Humane Long Island.

Clementine, as the lobster was named, is a 1-in-30-million find due to an uncommon genetic mutation, according to Markus Frederich, professor of marine science at the University of New England.

The crustacean reportedly arrived at the Stop & Shop on Long Island as part of a routine shipment of lobsters before July 4, and immediately became a local sensation, reported Patch.

“Everyone was giving suggestions, but nothing was really being done, so I went there myself,” Tracy McLaren, a trap-and-release specialist at the Southampton Animal Shelter, told the outlet.

Upon seeing Clementine in the tank, McLaren contacted various animal rescue organizations, eventually reaching out to John Di Leonardo of Humane Long Island.

Di Leonardo, an anthrozoologist and the executive director of the organization, quickly coordinated with Stop & Shop management, who agreed to donate Clementine for rehabilitation and release.

“Within 45 minutes, John (Di Leonardo) had the surrender papers,” McLaren added.

Di Leonardo expressed his hope that Clementine’s story would inspire others to reconsider the fate of lobsters and other sea creatures.

“We urge everyone to celebrate Clementine’s successful journey back to the wild by respecting all lobsters and not eating them, because no compassionate person should boil an animal alive.” he said.

Museum’s 3,500-year-old jar accidentally smashed by 4-year-old boy https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/08/27/museums-3500-year-old-jar-shattered-boy/ Wed, 28 Aug 2024 03:10:31 +0000 https://www.nydailynews.com/?p=7890051 A 3,500-year-old jar in the Hecht Museum in Haifa, Israel, was reportedly shattered after a four-year-old boy accidentally knocked it over.

The museum, which showcases archaeological finds without obstructions like glass cases, had displayed the Bronze Age artifact near its entrance, allowing visitors to get close to the piece, BBC News reported.

Dated between 2200 to 1500 BC, the jar –believed to have been used for carrying local supplies like wine and olive oil –was considered a rare find because it remained intact.

The incident occurred when the young visitor was unsupervised and “pulled the jar slightly” because “he was curious about what was inside,” according to a statement from the boy’s father. He added that he turned around and was “in shock” upon seeing the damage.

Lihi Laszlo, a representative from the Hecht Museum, emphasized the breakage was accidental and not an act of intentional damage.

“There are instances where display items are intentionally damaged, and such cases are treated with great severity, including involving the police,” Laszlo said. “In this case, however, this was not the situation. The jar was accidentally damaged by a young child visiting the museum, and the response will be accordingly.”

In a gesture of understanding, the museum has invited the boy and his family back for an organized tour, highlighting their commitment to education and positive visitor experiences.

A specialist in conservation has also been appointed to restore the jar, with hopes it will soon be back on display.

Despite the accident, the museum said it plans to continue its practice of displaying artifacts without glass barriers, believing it adds a “special charm” to the viewing experience.
